Brief Introduction of SIA

siaThe Shenyang Institute of Automation (SIA) was founded in November 1958. For more than 50 years, SIA has advanced automation science and engineering, making significant contributions to society, the economy and national security.

SIA’s research focuses on robotics, industrial automation and photoelectric information processing. As the cradle of China’s robotics technology, the institute has had more than 20 “firsts” in robotics development in China, making it the national leader.

SIA is a comprehensive research institute. Its 10 research departments are devoted, respectively, to robotics, oceanic engineering, space automation and technology, optoelectronic technology, intelligent detection and equipment, information services and intelligent control, equipment manufacturing technology, industrial control networks and systems, autonomous underwater vehicles, and digital factories.

SIA is home to 10 national and provincial key laboratories and engineering centers, including the National Engineering Research Center on Robotics, the State Key Laboratory of Robotics, and the CAS Key Laboratory for Networked Control Systems.

qianlong jiaolongSIA’s major achievements include the successful experimental deployment of Qianlong-1, an unmanned autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) jointly developed by SIA and several other institutes, in the Eastern Pacific in October 2013. This marks the first time a Chinese AUV has been used in a scientific expedition. In June 2012, the manned submersible Jiaolong, whose control system was developed by SIA, reached a record depth of 7,020 meters in a sea test in the Mariana Trench. In the field of rotorcraft UAVs, equipment independently developed by SIA has been widely used in power line inspection, autonomous pesticide spraying and disaster relief.

SIA has also made remarkable achievements in industrial wireless sensor network technology in recent years. The WIA-PA (Wireless Networks for Industrial Automation-Process Automation) specification developed under the direction of SIA was implemented in China in 2011 after being approved by the International Electrotechnical Commission in 2008.

SIA’s achievements are made possible by its talented workforce and graduate students. As of the end of 2013, SIA had more than 800 employees, including two members of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and more than 300 senior scientists and technicians. As an educational institution, SIA offers seven master’s degree programs, six Ph.D. programs and two postdoctoral research programs. The institute enrolls over 100 new graduate students annually.

Since 1985, SIA has established exchange and collaboration programs with universities, research institutes and high-tech companies in the United States, Russia, Japan and various European countries. Nearly 100 SIA researchers travel abroad annually to participate in various exchange activities. The institute also actively recruits overseas talent to conduct research at SIA under the CAS Thousand Talents Program, the CAS Hundred Talents Program, and the CAS Visiting Professorship for Senior International Scientists Program, among others.

As a key base for industrial and high-tech development in China, SIA aims to advance the domestic economy by fostering innovation. It also aims to become a leading international research institute in the field, presenting China’s outstanding achievements in robotics and industrial automation to the world.
